I love that you are willing to show the good, the ugly and the raw with all of us. Life is not perfect so let’s not sugar coat it. I worked in non clinical jobs at a children’s hospital for 18 yrs and can see what you describe in all the providers I worked with (and it’s even worse now!). But what’s interesting is how your words and feelings resonated with someone like me in a VERY different season and place in life (sahm of two young ones burnt out from Covid lockdown years while caregiving for elderly parents intensely going on 17 yrs), this all after decades of working high intensity jobs. I am on the other side of letting burnout actually burn me down and picking myself up from the ashes. So hopeful to hear your words that you are figuring it out in the midst of it all. Thank you again for sharing !
Hi Stefania! Thank you so very much for your thoughtful and heartfelt comment. Love the imagery of feeling burned down and trying to be a human phoenix, rising from the ashes. I am in this place currently, and your words really resonated.
This was such a WONDERFUL read and as another provider in primary care - I GET IT. So much yes. I can’t believe you somehow have the skill to slow down to write. When I’m in the midst of all I feel like I’m literally just on surviving mode. I agree that the amount of messages in in basket sucks. I read the other day an analogy to tell our non provider friends as this: imagine your job is to have 18-24 meetings every day - with different people. Each meeting requires you to prep differently and you’re leading each one so you absolutely have to stay on top of it and bring your best self. While writing your own meeting minutes. Then After each meeting you have to write a report with everything that was said and a plan. All which may be used against you. Additionally you are also responding to your full email messages which require another level of complexity. And you do this EVERY day. All of that to say, you’re so brave and courageous for sharing your experience and thoughts with us. I cannot put into words how much it helps me to know I’m not alone ❤️❤️❤️ much much love Katie!!
Omg this is EXACTLY how I describe the job to my boyfriend (who works in tech). I cannot put into words how much it warms me to hear you're also going through something similar!! And I just jotted down the very raw experience on a day to day basis, then blended out the edges over the weekend. I've been trying to get myself to journal for years and now finally doing it a la this newsletter!
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this and thinking about how to implement in my own life this week, as finding joy in the day to day has been a challenge in a transitional period of life. Thank you for sharing 💛 also… holy sh!t the 23% estimate at the end there was a reality check!
