Mike and I spontaneously went out to dinner the other night after a few chilly days in the apartment. We both ordered a drink and settled into a cozy meal.

It was a lovely time for reconnection, and while the week hadn’t gone entirely to plan (as you read earlier this week), we were still loving exploring our new neighborhood. After a few glasses of wine, I was feeling relaxed and at ease. And then I got home, was tossing and turning all night, had a mild headache and waves of acid reflux and nausea the next day. This was after two glasses of wine.

When I was younger, I drank far more frequently, but after a prolonged illness a few years ago, my relationship with alcohol has drastically changed. It’s not a never thing for me, though has become less and less frequent over the years, especially as I’ve prioritized sleep and stress management for overall wellbeing.

In this post, I’m talking about my relationship with alcohol, how and why I’ve decreased consumption, and ways my mental health has improved as a consequence. I’m also including my favorite non-alcoholic beverages and activities that are not centered around alcohol.

If you or someone you know are currently struggling with alcohol or substance use, this may be a post to skip.
